Next stop SoBro!

Most people think that north of New York's 125th street is devoid of art and culture, but if you take a closer look you will find just the opposite. The area that real-estate brokers refer to as SoBro is starting to take shape. The "Departure" series opened July 2nd at the Bruckner Gallery in The Bronx. The exhibition is a narrative in pictures exploring various themes including: Afro Punk, elderly addiction, our neighborhoods, family, activism, and immigration.

"Departure" features five photographers- Miguel Anaya, Lyric Cabral, Mark Nevers, Danny Ramon Peralta, and Bashira Webb - each developing their voices as socially oriented photographers exploring their communities.
I highly recommend taking some time to go to SoBro to check out this exhibition and support these young artist. The exhibition will run now through July 24th at the Bruckner Gallery, 1 Bruckner Blvd. (corner of Third Avenue).

E,

This is soo cute. I'm glad you've got some creative juices flowing on a regular basis. I'll admit this is the first time I read it, but I read all of your posts. Congrats and good luck

I love the idea of artists flourishing in the south bronx (i will never call it SoBro) and the idea that its kind of a latino thing. Buuuut, it makes me kind of sad that this is a part of the thinly veiled gentrificationthat going on there.

This will be great for all the yuppies that will move into the new "SoBro", pushing out all the people who will no longer be able to afford to live in this trendy new hood, and kill any authenticity it ever had.

Not that there is anything wrong with a neighborhood that previously sucked getting a makeover. its just that i kind of wish it was actually the neighborhood people taking the initiative.

Sorry about the rant.. I really like your blog and i miss hanging with you!
